The Drug War should be over. Two states have legalized marijuana and much of the nation is baffled by its own outsized reaction to drug use. Someone caught for possession of small amounts of marijuana can be slapped with a felony, jail time, and, once released, second class citizenship - he or she can no longer live in public housing, is often forced to pay back an absurd financial debt to the penal system, in many cases can no longer vote, and will have trouble finding employment. Under the One Strike Rule, even if someone you don't know is caught with drugs in your home, Public Housing authorities can and will evict you. It is time to reverse draconian anti-drug policies that target the poor, starting with this one.
