The production of the penny should be ceased, due to the fact that the penny costs more to make, in fact it costs 2.4 cents to make, while it is worth only 1. The older pennies are also worth more for the metal than they are worth as currency. If the pennies were collected back at the rate of 5 for a nickel, the government could then melt down the old pennies and sell the metal, which could shave down the deficit. By ceasing production it could also keep the deficit from going further. They are also no longer worth much at all, in fact the half-cent was worth more when the federal government discontinued it. For all of these reasons the production of the penny should be ceased.
