Currently State, County, and Local law enforcement organizations' training relies on mastering use of force, physical restraint, and aggressive, combative techniques to subdue suspects. This creates a deep resentment and mistrust of the police by the public, and worsens an already tense relationship. If officers were better-trained in non-violent, compassionate policing, with an end-goal of peaceful resolution to problems rather than simply imposing their superiority and authority at all costs, there would be fewer mentally ill citizens in jail, the public would feel safer, and Kelly Thomas would be alive. Please call on all levels of law-enforcement to work with professionals in the mental health fields to come up with training which can improve this situation for all citizens.
