End the practice of declaring a National Day of Prayer

Created by R.C. on September 27, 2011

Historically our Presidents have issued proclamations declaring a National Day of Prayer. This is a clear violation of the Establishment Clause that should end because our government is not empowered to either recommend or not recommend prayer as a beneficial activity.

James Madison, author of the 1st Amendment, in his 'Detached Memoranda' stated that issuing such proclamations are "no part of the trust delegated to political rulers". We Americans should protect the integrity of the 1st Amendment and return to the vision of a government completely neutral about religious matters as recommended by James Madison.
