For-Profit prison companies are paid with tax dollars that they then use to increase their profits by paying lobbyists and supporting politicians who change laws not to increase the peace but to increase the number of Americans locked up in prison.
In addition to this, these companies such as the GEO Group have long histories of abuse and neglect. It is in their best interests to keep as many Americans locked up for as long as possible simply to make more money.
Some contacts even stipulate a 'prisoner minimum' where Federal and State authorities must pay tax dollars for prisoners even when there aren't any there.
We need to end this practice now.
