The link above is just one account of many, many prisoners today deprived of their most fundamental human rights. What these convicts have done is unacceptable, and they deserved to be locked away. But some of these men and women have not seen the sun in years. They haven't truly felt air. They don't know the world as we know it. Boredom for us may be an adventure park for them. We think solitary confinement is punishment and it is - but years of it drives prisoners mad. It is a precursor to mental health issues, and prolonged imprisonment (months-years) in total segregated confinement must end. As William Blake said after 25 years in solitary confinement, "I have served a sentence worse than death".
