In June 2010, the HHS Secretary's Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability voted against recommending a change to the FDA policy of a lifetime deferral for Men who have Sex with other Men.
In 2006, the American Red Cross and America's Blood Centers supported a change to one year since most recent contact. In 2010, the New York City Council called for changes: "This ban was based on prejudice… and misunderstandings about the HIV/AIDS disease. Given the constant need for blood, it does not make common sense to prohibit donations from an entire population."
