President Obama has signed a bill to enact sanctions against the Venezuelan government due to its alleged human rights abuses. The evidence of these abuses has come from far-right Venezuelan exiles and Venezuelan opposition leaders. The leaders of the Venezuelan opposition and exile groups who supported these sanctions also supported the 2002 Venezuelan coup and have committed human rights violations themselves. After the revelations of the C.I.A.'s torture program this week, it is pure hypocrisy for the U.S. government to justify these sanctions under the guise of protecting human rights. The Venezuelan government has repeatedly shown restraint and patience with incredibly violent and destructive protestors. President Obama, please support a bill revoking the sanctions against Venezuela!
