The Humane Society of the United States estimates that animal shelters care for 6-8 million dogs and cats every year in the United States, of whom approximately 3-4 million are euthanized. These animals are innocent, homeless, and without help.
We must not accept routine euthanasia as a social norm. By educating pet owners, offering expanding shelters, and increasing community involvement, kill shelters can be stopped.
The Government must help. The Humane Society and other "No-Kill" shelters need funding on order to keep animals off the streets and educate the populace on proper animal control. Free spaying and neutering clinics would be an incredible first step, just as an example.
We must speak up now and tell our government that needless killing on animals is simply not acceptable.
