Currently, in the United States, committing rape is considered a fairly minor crime by US Courts. Despite prison sentences and lifelong reputations for some rapists, the statute of limitations erases justice for many victims. This allows for rapists to walk free if this heinous crime was committed a certain number of years before. Many rape victims face shame and hurt after being treated as if they are worthless-- a feeling that should be understood by our courts. They often are unable to speak of the abuse for many years, and instead of rewarding them the justice they deserve after experiencing one of the worst things in the world, they far too often decide that it's been too long to punish the person responsible for such agony.
