To end insurance payouts by the Service Members Group Life Insurance (SGLI) for service members that commit suicide while on active duty. A service member's mental condition is considered a factor in committing suicide, that the service member is not or was not of the "right" mind when they commit the act of suicide. This policy to pay on suicide has contributed to the high rate of suicide in our military forces and is unusual, contravening normal life insurance practices worldwide. Stress, combat, extensive overseas tours, isolation have all contributed to an unfortunate situation among military members but the promise of a golden parachute ($250k-$600k) for their families as a result of suicide is hard to refuse while in a weakened mental state.
