A gestational surrogate is a woman who carries a child conceived through IVF using the egg & sperm of the intended parents/donors.
With the Affordable Care Act, "Maternity care and childbirth...are considered an essential health benefit. This means all qualified health plans inside and outside the Marketplace must cover them."
Yet many health insurance companies are continuing to exclude "surrogate pregnancy" meaning surrogates and intended parents have to pay out of pocket for maternity care expenses.
When a women (including a surrogate) uses her own insurance that has maternity coverage, it should not exclude any pregnancy, no matter how she became pregnant, or the intention of that pregnancy.
A pregnancy is a pregnancy and basic maternity coverage should never be excluded.
