My wife and I got married in August and were greeted with a huge extra tax bill from Uncle Sam for the entire year that we got married and future years going forward. The issue is that tax brackets for married couples are not twice those of tax brackets for singles thus married couples who earn well reach the higher tax brackets more quickly than they would have, if they had been single. This is pure discrimination against married couples which is not only unfair but also most likely damages the economy. For example when a married couple is faced with a choice of both working and paying for childcare (people employed =3) or having either the father or mother look after the child (people employed =1), they are incentivized to choose the latter option with the present tax bias.
