According to CALPIRG, "between 1995 and 2010, $16.9 billion of U.S. taxpayer money was spent on subsidizing four common food additives: corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, corn starch, and soy oils." The production of these food items is environmentally destructive, and they are one of the major culprits in the obesity and diabetes epidemic in America.
Ending subsidies for commodity crops would allow consumers to see the true price of their food and hopefully promote healthier eating and buying.
