End the transfer of military grade weaponry to local law enforcement

Created by D.M. on August 15, 2014

We the People urge you to propose a bill that ends the transfer of military grade equipment to local law enforcement agencies. The National Defense Authorization Act signed in the 90s (specifically section 1033) that authorized this transfer likely began with good intentions. However, in the years after its authorization, the public has witnessed an escalating use of force in response to routine crimes. Law enforcement arriving in camouflaged gear with military rifles in mine resistant armored vehicles only serves to exasperate tensions and divorce police from the public they are intended to protect and serve.

Military equipment belongs to the military and does not belong on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri or any other US city.
