Health is a special concern to transgender Americans. We are faced with routine discrimination in health insurance even after the Affordable Care Act. This discrimination comes in the form of insurance exclusions against procedures and treatments deemed necessary by respected American and international health organizations and transgender healthcare providers. These exclusions exist solely because of philosophical conclusions and not established medical facts regarding the special needs of transgender health care. We ask for nationwide coverage of medically necessary reassignment, facial, and breast surgeries along with coverage for hormone therapy and transgender mental health services. Our insurance should cover the care deemed necessary and in many cases life saving by our physicians.
