Under the Fourth Ammendment to the US Constitution, all citizens are free from search and seizure without due-process. A killing of a citizen without trial, no matter how deserving of it the citizen is, is a violation of the Fourth Ammendment.
There is no question Anwar al-Awlaki deserved his fate, but in the United States we have a process for bringing our citizens to justice. If we allow ourselves to violate our principles to bring down an evil person, then we have fallen prey to the machinations of al-Awlaki. His desire was more than just killing his countrymen. It was to fundamentally alter our society.
By extra-judiciously killing al-Awlaki, we have done exactly what our enemies want. We have betrayed our Constitution and set an ominous precedent. Please end this practice.
