A government whose army is staffed solely by volunteers can only fight in wars that it has enough soldiers to win. This is democracy in its purest form; if a nation can convince, not coerce, enough of its people into volunteering to fight in a war, then the nation can fight in that war. In this scenario, each individual is given the choice to decide what they believe is worth fighting for, and is allowed to act according to their own conscience. Currently, our military runs on volunteers, but the government can still reinstate the draft at any time. This is the purpose of the selective service system; it allows the government to identify and locate young men for conscription.
I, and all those who have signed below, ask that mandatory selective services registration be abolished.
