Take steps to revise US tax policy to reflect true equality among citizens that file as single, unmarried, and/or without dependents. US tax policy for far too long has discriminated against people who choose to not marry. Currently in the US, 61% of citizens have never married and the Government is raking in unfair tax dollars as a penalty of being single or without children. the US should expand federal employment and housing discrimination law to cover single people, and to promote the same treatment at the state level. Likewise, the United States is one of only a few developed countries to retain the joint tax return, and we should think seriously about reconsidering whether it’s actually justified.
