As fuel demand has dropped and droughts have damaged crops, the use of corn to produce ethanol for powering vehicles has risen due to legally mandated gallon quotas. This has squeezed the supply of corn available for feeding people and livestock, causing prices to rise at a time when many families and farmers cannot afford the increase.
Meanwhile this source of fuel is by no means carbon-neutral. Fertilizers and other industrial farming techniques cause corn production to be an energy-intensive process. Thus the environmental benefits of using corn for fuel are doubtful at best.
We should stop taking corn that could feed people and animals and burning it to power SUVs. It is not an effective or sustainable way to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.
