Whereas, The United States Federal Government has a responsibility to be frugal with taxpayer money; and
Whereas, The cost of manufacturing a penny is over twice that of the face value of a penny resulting in an annual government subsidy of over 100 million dollars;
The penny’s opportunity cost is 1 billion dollars annually;
The last coin decommissioned, in 1857, had more buying power than today’s dime;
Many American businesses refuse to accept pennies including the American Millitary;
Many other countries have made similar transitions harmlessly;
Now, therefore be it resolved, That we the people of The United States of America wish to discontinue the use of pennies and round to the nearest 5 cents.
