Every major English dictionary describes the term “redskins” as derogatory and the United States government has went as far as rejecting patent applications for the term on the grounds that the word is a known racial slur. Over the past year, hundreds of people have spoken out about the harmful effects of ethic stereotyping. Sportscasters, professional athletes, civil rights groups, religious leaders, city councils, school boards, and members of Congress have said the time has come to stop using the R-word.
