The war on drugs has cost the people of the United States far more than the billions of dollars wasted in the effort, it has cost countless people their lives and reputation. The money saved could be directed toward saving medicare and social security. Drug dependence is a medical issue, NOT a criminal issue. This war is more insane than the war in Iraq, for this is a war we have declared upon ourselves. That great social liberal Richard Nixon would be dismayed to learn how far astray we have gone from his concept of helping drug and alcohol dependent people.
