The so-called "War on Drugs" has cost the taxpayers billions over the last 40 years, and has raised incarceration rates for non-violent crimes to all-time highs. Current drug laws and enforcement methods are ineffective at reducing drug use and are a clear detriment on society, particularly the African-American community. The War on Drugs is a clear misappropriation of Law Enforcement funding and has been denounced by law enforcement, health officials, and economists alike. It has been clear for 20 years now that the focus on punishment rather than treatment simply does not work. It is time that the federal government completely overhauls its drug policy. We have lost the War on Drugs, let us finally try something new.
