The government continues to ignore the fact that addiction is a mental illness and not a crime. The War on Drugs continues to waste money doing little to affect the use of drugs. Instead, the "war" incarcerates those with addiction, and those of lower socioeconomic status, while driving up the market value of drugs and encouraging the their continued production.
By signing this petition, we are asking the government to look at drug use and addiction in a different light. We are requesting that the billions of dollars spent every year on the War on Drugs be spent on a more effective plan that would better serve the nation and help to promote social equality and tolerance of those with mental illness and addiction.
