We know that prohibition does not work to deter the production, sale, or use of harmful drugs. From the very first time we tried prohibition, with alcohol in the 1920's and early 1930's, it was a failure. Then, as with today, people still use the prohibited substances. The newly formed underground markets attract organized crime and violence for the profit available by dealing in illegal substances. Both cases of prohibition have torn apart countless lives whether it be through the legal system, injury, or death. Rather than inciting all this violence, both in America and abroad, lets get people the help they need. We cannot afford to fill our prisons beyond capacity and make people criminals over what they choose to put in their own body.
