Recent headlines have made more Americans aware that often violence, in its many forms including firearm violence, is precipitated by or associated with mental illness. It is not possible to remove all instruments capable of causing death or injury from existence, nor should otherwise law abiding citizens be subjected to restriction of establshed civil liberties and inherent rights. Much more of a serious concern than whether criminals are inclined to follow existing or proposed legislation regarding possession and use of firearms is the existence of individuals with either undiagnosed or mistreated mental health issues. At the heart of any solution to senseless violence perpetrated upon innocent victims including children is a need to recognize underlying causes of such violence.
