The number of police officers who have died in the line of duty in 2011 has increased 14% nationwide from last year, according to The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. About 10,000 people in the United States may be wrongfully convicted of serious crimes each year.The study also found that the most important factor leading to wrongful conviction is misidentification and 11% of wrongful convictions were negligence by criminal justice officials, coerced confessions, "frame ups" by guilty parties, and general overzealousness by officers and prosecutors.
Wrongful convictions undermine public confidence in the judicial system and should be viewed with alarm.
If body cameras are widely adopted by police departments it can strengthen objective evidence.
