Lolita is a 20 foot long, 7000 lb. orca who has lived at the Miami Seaquarium for over 40 years. Her living conditions do not meet the requirements set by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) in 1966.
After multiple requests to the Miami Seaquarium to move Lolita to a bigger pool or sea pen, and offer her protection from the sun, she remains captive in a pool that is below standards of the AWA.
Lolita’s birthright is the L25 matriline of the “L” pod of the Southern Resident orca community in the Pacific Northwest. It is our request that the United States Government be involved in this matter and enforce this federal law. We request Lolita to be removed from the Miami Seaquarium and rehabilitated in a waiting sea pen in Washington State. It is our hope that she be reintegrated into her pod.
