Incorporating the academic study of religion in the public school setting would encourage tolerance, open-mindedness, and multi-cultural understanding.
Religious understanding leads to tolerance, tolerance to a more functional society.
This does not need to conflict the laws of church and state, as the student would not be taught how to practice certain religions, rather the students would be taught why certain practices look the way they do and how the belief systems, rituals, and customs establish the culture.
The result of this knowledge could aid in foreign affairs, create more jobs, and allow students of secondary school age to develop a world-view outside of their own.
