Stop civil rights violations in Indian Country. Indian tribes have violated, and continue to violate the civil rights of their citizens. Indians have been denied the basic due process, equal protection, and other rights provided to any other citizen of the United States. Convene an oversight hearing regarding the enforcement of the Indian Civil Rights Act of 1968 (“ICRA”). Congress failed to include an effective enforcement mechanism within the ICRA that would hold tribal officials accountable for committing the prohibited acts. Tribal officials abuse the doctrine of sovereign immunity to escape prosecution for violating laws intended to protect the victims of their actions.
