Currently, there are 35 million slaves in the world; equivalent to the 2013 population of Canada. Only 0.1% of them are helped annually. No country is free from the torment of slavery, yet only 5,500 traffickers are convicted yearly. Since 2000, the US has established laws against trafficking in person however it is still a $150 billion industry - antislavery programs are only funded by 0.2% of that.
These figures are simply astounding. Little is being done for a problem so grave. Hence, youths in Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur have come together to eradicate modern day slavery through a 100% student-led movement. The 24 Hour Race aims to bring justice to the oppressed and reach out to more people who are passionate about the cause and are looking for a way to make a difference
