Enforce the Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987

Created by W.C. on January 27, 2015

Currently there are more than 300,000 elderly nursing homes residents suffering from dementia and being subjected to an overuse of anti-psychotic medication. These drugs are ineffective at treating the symptoms of dementia, and studies have shown they increase the rate of death among those with dementia by 80%. Despite these findings, many nursing homes continue to recklessly use these drugs to sedate patients. However, in 1987 Congress passed the Nursing Home Reform Act which prohibits the use of anti-psychotics and chemical restraints that aren't medically necessary. As a result, this petition seeks to pressure President Obama to allocate the resources necessary to enforce this regulation and protect the elderly.
