The AFA authorizes the IRS to take away tax-exemptions of non-profit hospitals if they charge poor people inflated "charge master" prices ( a common practice!) The IRS has yet to write the specific regulations. As a result, 2 million people have been forced into bankruptcy. Also hospitals are now required to make public a list of their standard charges, but HHS has not put out guidelines for how the list is to be put together. Thirdly, the Treasury is supposed to list the charity care that is provided by every hospital. The list has not been issued.
This petition demands that the Obama administration follow through with these easy and important parts of the law.
