In 2012, 58% of Americans wanted gun laws to be stronger. There have already been several laws enacted that are making a notable difference in gun violence rates but there is more that we can do. We need to enforce stronger gun laws before another tragedy takes place.
We can re-authorize the 1994-2004 Federal Assault Weapons Ban which prohibited the sale and manufacture of semi-automatic weapons. We could also strengthen the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993. This law requires gun dealers to perform background checks on who they sell the guns to. Unfortunately, this law only applies to around 60% of gun sales, leaving 40% without a background check.
