Making gun ownership illegal is NOT the answer to reducing gun crime it would actually cause crime to increase, if someone is going to commit a crime they do not care about any gun control law, a disarmed citizen is at greater risk. The so-called assault rifle is also a superior hunting and sporting firearm and the law-abiding citizen should NOT be punished. With almost 315 Million people in the United States these few should not have us make irrational decisions.
Create a Federal Firearms License, give it to the ATF. This would one allow the ATF to be notified, flag the system so a person could not purchase a firearm in any state. Allowing law-abiding citizens in any state while being able to protect themselves and their loved ones.
Most importantly we need to enforce Current laws!
