Enlist the help of Physician Execs to curb rising healthcare costs

While current programs to curtail rising healthcare spending seems reasonable, the solutions were proposed (mostly) by non-physicians. As such, there are two glaring opportunities: some of the proposed solutions miss the mark; wrong targets were identified; no relevance to quality, patient safety, or efficiency. A case in point - Meaningful Use of IT systems by healthcare professionals. Most of the current targets for financial rewards do little to improve the quality of care as they do not address the 29 billion dollar problem of hospital readmissions. In addition, they contribute very little to efficiency as they ignore high healthcare costs from big dollar tests and duplicate testing. Importantly, patient safety initiatives like infection prevention and other complications are ignored.
