With student loan debt across the nation approaching $1 trillion, the costs of higher education are becoming a serious threat to national interests.
We petition the President and United States Congress to establish a fair and non-profit government program to issue student loans and begin to reign in increasing college expenses by implementing the following measures:
Become a lender of first resort by setting fixed rates to reflect real inflation rates and costs. The government should not make a profit off of education.
Impose lending limits based on studies of students' ability to repay debt based off a variety of factors, including median income for the field of study.
Impose lending limits based on a school's track record of graduating students with positive payment history.
