As it currently stands, no local hire can live on base even though housing is available. The select bases that actually allow local hire to move on to base (Camp Zama, Japan), charge double the price they charge soldiers and civilians on a paid housing tenure. For example, Camp Zama soldiers pay $900 per month on rent (Paid for by Housing Management Office), but local hires are expected to pay $2,081 (Out of pocket) for the same unit. How is this justified? Basically, we feel as though local hires are being treated fairly all around the table (Poor wages, no paid housing, no transportation cost).
