A provision currently exists in the Fair Labor Standards Act (section 14c) which allows companies the opportunity to obtain government permission to pay a subminimum wage to their disabled workers.
This issue recently was given attention on the TV show Rock Center: www.nbcnews.com/id/21134540/vp/52280748. The segment showed companies paying its disabled employees a wage significantly lower than the government mandated minimum $7.25 per hour. In some instances disabled employees are paid as low as $0.25 per hour.
Currently, the 75 year old legal loophole effects more than 216K Americans who are eligible to earn less than minimum wage because of the law. Lets work together to fix the Fair Labors Standard Act to ensure that every American who performs meaningful work receives fair pay.
