Ensure that food products containing gluten are labeled as such.

Created by J.H. on May 04, 2014

Packaging for foods containing gluten, a protein found in food processed with wheat and other grains, should be clearly labeled to indicate that gluten is present in the product.

"This product contains" already applies to milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts, and soybeans... but this is not sufficient as wheat is not the only source of gluten. Gluten can also be found in rye, barley, triticale, malt, and brewer's yeast.

Peanut allergies affect 0.6% of Americans. Gluten sensitivity affects 1% of Americans and this number is growing rapidly.

Gluten sensitivities can cause bloating, abdominal discomfort or pain, constipation and diarrhea, mouth ulcers, and intestinal damage, which can lead to lactose intolerance as well.

Please pass this along to the FDA.
