Housing developers helped the real estate downturn by building big houses with prices out of the reach of moderate income families. Blinded by the "American dream fantasy," people were illogically "qualified" by banks for homes they couldn't possibly afford.
The government should oversee new housing developments approval process (via Builders Association submissions) to ensure that projects approved during any Fiscal Year have 25% of developments for homes to low-moderate income families. This is especially due to the obvious fact that the middle class is disappearing by going down into poverty instead of upward into the rich class. During the last decades, the incomes and purchasing power of the majority of US workers have plummeted, and they need homes too.
