Ensure that Non-violent People with Mental Illness are Not Listed in a Federal Database

Created by C.M. on January 19, 2013

We acknowledge that there is a problem when violent mass-shootings occur and the assailant has a history of mental illness. However, statistics show that people with mental illness are as non-violent as the general population. We are concerned that non-violent people with such disabilities will lose their rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 due to automatic inclusion onto such a list.

The stigma against people who are given a diagnosis from the DSM increases after every mass-shooting even though many people with such diagnoses have no interest in owning a firearm. There is no assurance that the use of this list will be limited to gun purchases in the near future. Therefore, we request that only those with a history of violence be included on this database.
