We endorse the position statements of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, the Obesity Action Coalition, the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, The Obesity Society and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, in letters to Secretary Kathleen Sebelius of DHHS (http://tinyurl.com/ax96shl), and to Director John Berry of OPM (http://tinyurl.com/abzb7hh), urging this Administration to protect patient access to medically necessary obesity prevention and treatment services, and to define management of obesity and metabolic disorders as part of “chronic disease management” within Item #9 Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management.
