Cities and homeowners associations across the country have attempted to make front or back yard gardens for the purpose of growing food for personal consumption, even on property owned by the gardeners, illegal. Gardeners have even been brought up on charges for having gardens for the purpose of growing edible plants for consumption or education. The ability to grow our own food should be a basic right.
We should be able to provide for own basic needs when possible. This administration, particularly the First Lady, are invested in the healthy eating of our children, gardening as a life skill, as well as food stability. Let's ensure this right is not taken from urban areas by creating a uniform law to ensure gardening is legal and guaranteed when abiding by water and food safety laws.
