The US federal government has recently raised the issue of repealing the protected status of a handful of the parks in the National Park system. As someone who has visited and photographed all the National Parks in the lower 48 states, I would find it a travesty to imagine Tortugas National Park or Virigin Islands National Park unprotected and free for looters and collectors to ruin for any future generations.
At some time, the majority of the US government saw fit to pass legislation decreeing these lands sacred and special enough to warrant diligent protection. Removing this designation would not only cause the immediate loss of jobs, but would cast permanent doubt on the US's real attitude towards environmental land usage and the need for care in the growing environmental crisis.
