The electoral college might have been effective back when communication was limited to horse-riding messengers, but thanks to new technologies, it simply isn't necessary. Mathematically speaking, it is possible to win the presidency with a mere 20% of the popular vote through the electoral college, which doesn't properly express democracy. The College also leads to an excruciatingly annoying amount of advertisements pandering to those living in "swing states", such as Ohio and Florida.
