In 2013, the United States spent 720 billion dollars on defense and international security assistance. In 2011, the nation’s defense budget was greater than the next 13 countries combined. Included in the 720 billion dollars was 20 billion dollars allocated to nuclear weapons development. During its “War on Terrorism,” the United States spent more than five trillion dollars (equal to each American paying $16,000). Allocated in the country’s budget is another 80 billion dollars for the criminal justice system—only slightly less than one-fourth of the global sum spent on criminal justice. At the World Summit on Food Security in 2008, FAO Director General Jacques Diouf said an annual 30 billion dollars could eradicate world hunger. 30 billion dollars—a mere 4%.
