By Executive Order mandate that the federal vehicle fleet of sedans and light trucks meet a CAFE goal of 35 miles per gallon by 2016 and meet a CAFE goal of 50 mpg by 2020. These goals will reduce government vehicle operational fuel costs, increase demand and supply of hybrid and all-electric vehicles, spur additional innovation in fuel economy technologies, and increase the supply of fuel efficient vehicles in the used-car market since most agencies replace one-third of their fleet every year. This policy change does not require new legislation.
As a follow-on activity, mandate similar goals for the federal fleet of small patrol and search and rescue boats.
