Establish and fund a national high-priority project to obtain commercially viable fusion energy production with a combination of increased seed funding and an X-prize award. We need to accelerate research over the plodding pace of the France-based experimental ITER project. Waiting until 2027 for ITER to possibly reach operational status is foolish. Whether you believe that climate, security or finite energy resources drives our need for alternative means of power, the clock is ticking. America should take the definitive lead on this and succeed within seven 7 years. More seed money for the teams and a considerable X-Prize should be awarded for the system that produces power at a cost-competitive level. Then we can license the technology to the world and recover our investment.
